Editor's Notes
July 14, 2019:
At this time, we have decided to remove the Madeira Provo Teak Edge-Grain; it's attractive, but over time it may warp, and there are plenty of other high-quality teak options available. We like the Teakhaus Rectangle for its blend of usability and attractiveness, although as with most other top-notch wood choices, it's something of an investment. We also removed the Prepworks by Progressive due to some durability concerns. But we still like the fairly similar OXO Good Grips carving board. We should note, though, that while the OXO model can go in the dishwasher, extreme heat can cause it to warp — so skip the heated drying and leave it on your dish rack, instead.
Finally, after some debate, we decided to add the John Boos RA Series Maple. John Boos cutting boards have become quite popular, and we like that they are hand made by a company with an eye toward ecological responsibility. That said, they require ongoing care and cautious use that many users may not wish to deal with. If you need the weight and size, and love the looks, they may be worth it as long as you're willing to be cautious; if not, you might opt for the bamboo Royal Craft Wood model instead. It also requires ongoing conditioning, but if you forget to maintain it, it's far less expensive to replace.

Brooklyn Butcher Blocks End Grain Walnut Although you'll see larger choices, it's tough to find one that's more robust and handsome than the Brooklyn Butcher Blocks End Grain Walnut. The brickwork pattern lends it durability, while the end grain has self-healing properties that keep it sanitary, but it does require a large upfront investment. brooklynbutcherblocks.com
