Our list of bathtub rails was greatly expanded during the 2019 update, as there is now a good variety of designs to choose from. One thing anyone familiar with our previous list may have noticed is that we removed all suction-based models. While these can be a safe option if properly installed, we feel that user's should check how securely they are attached to the wall before each and every use. Because of this, we thought most people would find them inconvenient, especially when the majority of screw-on models on our list are just as easy to install and tend to keep a secure hold for considerably longer. That being said, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't periodically check these to ensure they are still firmly clamped on every once in a while.
If you are searching for tool-free installation, take a look at the Medline Safety Grab Bar, Drive Medical RTL12036, Vive Shower Support, PCP 7252, AquaSense 785-340, Medline Deluxe Grab Bar, and Carex B20400. These all either have a knob or lever that you can use to tighten them in place by hand. Since they aren't permanently mounted, they are great choices for rental homes and apartments, too. The Carex Tri-Grip is also a temporary option, but it requires tools to install. However, if you don't mind that, you'll be rewarded with a versatile model that has an attractive chrome finish.
It is worth noting that clamp-on models are rarely rated to support more than 300 pounds, with some only being capable of 200 or 250 pounds.
