This wiki has been updated 20 times since it was first published in October of 2018. There may be no quicker or easier way to impart a tropical ambiance to a space, whether indoors or out, than with a bamboo fence. Not only are they easy to install, but they are also relatively cheap compared to traditional fencing. Additionally, bamboo is a highly sustainable, fast-growing plant, so you'll be doing both your wallet and the planet a favor at the same time. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

September 14, 2020:

Few things do as much to give a place a tropical or Japanese aesthetic as bamboo fences, especially for such a relatively low cost. Whether you want to surround your yard with a Kennin-ji style fence or bring a bit of tiki-style flair to your balcony, one of the models on this list can help.

If the goal is to create privacy, you'll want to lean towards one of the options with minimal spacing between the poles, such as the Backyard X-Scapes Natural, Master Garden Products BWF-48 Tonkin, and Forever Bamboo Natural. Conversely, if you simply want something for purely decorative purposes and still want to allow a bit of wind and sun through, the Gardman R668, which is made with very thin reeds, or the Master Garden Products Pickets NBF-48, which has very widely spaced poles, will do nicely.

The Forever Bamboo Natural Black is great for someone who wants their bamboo to stand out a bit, as it comes in a rich black color, as opposed to the light tan of most others. If you choose the tortoise option of the Backyard X-Scapes BAMA-TR05 Panels, you'll also get something with a less-than-common look. However, this latter choice is best suited for indoor use, as it is made of flat slats that will deteriorate quickly if constantly exposed to the elements. It is worth noting that it isn't designed for freestanding use either.

If you just want to partition off a section of a room or block an AC unit or garbage cans so they aren't an eyesore, the Master Garden Products 4-Panel will do nicely. You won't have to worry about any installation, as it is completely freestanding, though you may want to take it down if you expect strong winds for a few days.

Those who just want to run something around a flower bed or along a garden walkway next to their path lights should look to the Bamboo Garden Border and Forever Bamboo 31-B8 Black Border.

We realize that bamboo fences may all seem very similar to the untrained eye, but they actually come in a variety of different sizes, diameters, styles, and even colors, each of which gives a very different feeling to an indoor or outdoor space. We did our best to gather a range of options, while still only including models that can last a long time in the sun and rain, unless stated otherwise on that particular item.

Special Honors

Cali Bamboo Carbonized The Cali Bamboo Carbonized has warmer tones than many others, so if you find the natural options a bit too light, you may prefer the rich hues this one offers. Once installed, it requires very little maintenance, and it comes with a seven year warranty. calibamboo.com
