We've included a wide variety of options to suit almost any child — from thought-provoking STEM activities to modern electronics — and ranked them here by their entertainment value, durability, and educational potential. Editor's Notes

November 23, 2020:

The toys on this list not only keep kids engaged but also help them develop useful skills. And although most options are geared for 6-year-old boys, you'll find that girls may get a kick out of them, too. If you're looking for specific gifts for 6-year-old girls, check out the review on this website.

The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX2 doesn't really hold the interest of most 6-year-olds boys. Particularly, if they have access to a smartphone or tablet. So, we removed it and added the Osmo Genius Starter Kit instead. This device will grow with your child and keep him engaged, at least until he reaches the age of 10. And although the Last Jedi Hyperdrive BB-8 is a fun toy to play with, we replaced it with the Sonomo Guardian Robot, which has more interactive functions. The remote requires batteries, but the robot can be charged via a USB cord.

November 06, 2019:

Given the console's excellent parental controls and the litany of kid-friendly games (rated E for Everyone) that you can find for it, including the Nintendo Switch on this list seemed like a no-brainer. The controls are small enough to fit in a six-year-old's hands, and I know for a fact that I was playing the original Legend of Zelda well before I turned six. The model and bundle we chose is a little fancier than the standard Switch, and it comes with a Pokemon game that's right in the kindergarten wheelhouse, as well as themed controllers.

We also added a Star Wars toy, the Last Jedi Hyperdrive BB-8, to the list because the final installment of that franchise is right around the corner, as well as a fun space themed STEM kit that offers some really cool activities.

One item we removed from our ranking was a pair of stilts. Children pose enough of a risk to their own safety just by standing still at ground level. Elevating them a couple feet off the earth just seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen, and we always want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the children who use the products we recommend.
